Teams to Learn from Experts about Designing Self-Assessment Modules

07 Jun 2021

The teams have been busy meeting with their mentoring managers from RCSI and participating in workshops hosted by MIT Solve. This is in preparation for a showcase event in August, when the teams will demonstrate their prototypes.

This month’s workshop will focus on the importance and key principles of self-assessment in their training modules. One of the requirements of the Global Surgical Training Challenge is that the modules offer an ability for trainees to assess their learned skills outside the traditional academic or supervised hospital environment.

Guest speakers will include:

  • Dr Carla Pugh, Professor of Surgery at Stanford University and Director of the Technology Enabled Clinical Improvement (T.E.C.I.) Center
  • Professor Richard Arnett, the Director of Psychometrics at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland
  • Dr Ahmed Ghazi, principal investigator at the Simulation Innovation Lab at Rochester University
  • Dr Björn Hartmann, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley
  • Dr Dara O’Keeffe, Simulation Lead in Postgraduate Surgical Education and Training at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

The Discovery Award teams will also learn about:

  • Designing questions and feedback for self study
  • Using physical models
  • Motion tracking, pressure sensing and video analysis
  • Developing performance ratings

The workshops give team members the opportunity to hear from global experts. But they also share learnings with each other, creating a community of innovative practice.
